Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Or, a tilting spear in bend Vert, between a horses head couped and a gauntlet of the like, a bordure Gules.  Attached below the shield a tripartite Gold scroll inscribed OBSERVARE ET AGERE in Red letters.

Symbolism
The shield of the former 111th Armored Cavalry Regiment, differenced by the addition of a border, is used to indicate descent of the 170th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion from the 2d Battalion of that organization.  The border is red to indicate the units present function as Artillery.  The shield is in the colors for Armor.  The horses head and lance symbolize Cavalry and medieval Armor respectively.  The gauntlet represents the shock action of Armor and its ability to deliver a decisive blow.  The motto translates to To Observe and Act.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 19 July 1955.  It was rescinded on 30 June 1961.
